Five Actions You Need To Take To Make 2016 Rock

The clock struck 12. Happy new year! As the champagne flowed – did you start imagining what 2016 might hold for you and your business? What actions you might need to take?

If you answered yes – you wouldn’t be the only one.

Small business is tough, it’s is mentally and physically tough. Finding the energy to keep going can be a struggle at times (trust me, we have all been there at times), but somehow the dawning of a new year seems to bring with it new energies, passions and plans.

So, it’s a new year and a new you – what actions are you now going to take to make 2016 rock?

As a small business owner myself, I work on five key areas to keep myself on the right path.

Research

I think this is one of the most important actions we need to take. Too often we get caught up in our own little bubbles of clients, accounts, rent, bills etc. How often do you actually take time out to surf the internet and be inspired? I’m not talking about looking at cat videos – I am talking about looking into what your competitors are up to, what fellow allied health professionals around the country are doing, international trends, new business strategies…the list goes one.

Before you get you start taking on 2016, take a moment to look outside your own square – I think you might be surprised at what might get you energised for the new year.

Educate Yourself

Once again, it’s so important to step away from the day to day running of a business and invest in yourself. Is there any aspect of owning your own business that you struggle with? Marketing? Accounts? Business planning? Why not – learn!

In this day and age there are so many options of courses, online workshops, podcasts, free learning modules and workbooks that are just there to be used. (Cheeky plug for our own workbooks here).

There is no excuse to not empower yourself with the knowledge and skills that could help you as a business owner. Get off the couch and do it!

Planning

This is the part most people miss. Planning off the cuff seems to be the rage these days. I speak to many business owners about their plans and I usually receive guilty grins. You know who you are!

Planning doesn’t have to be a chore, it should be a time to reflect on what has worked/not worked in the past and to build for greater success.

If you find a year plan difficult, why not look at the next three or six months? Give yourself some achievable goals and write out how you are going to achieve these.

Note: When I say write it down, I mean WRITE it out. Trust me, writing is good for the soul!

Networking

Yep, good ole fashioned networking. Get out from the office and away from the computer and get talking to people who will help you develop as a business owner.

Perhaps you can seek out a mentor from the industry? Perhaps it’s catching up with other business owners? Perhaps it’s providing a free class to the community?

Networking is about talking to people – connecting on different levels. It’s about developing new relationships that will benefit your profit in the future.

Goals

Goals, goals, goals, no plan of action would be the same without them. I know I mentioned it in planning but I want to reiterate how important having goals is.

Working in allied health you should understand the importance of goal setting – it keeps you motivated and on track.

“Having lots of clients” is not an acceptable goal (again, you should know this) – make those goals not just about your business, make them about yourself as well.

So there you have it, five key actions you need to take to make 2016 the best year ever. Get motivated, get organised and get awesome!
